The exhibition Desať (Ten) is dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Studio of Product Design and the Studio of Digital Design, both from the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at Tomas Bata University in Zlin (The Czech Republic). Presenting a wide selection of the best student design works, the exhibition captures the many faces of young Czech design and it’s potential directions.

The idea of organising this exhibition was suggested by the jury members of the competition for craft-oriented design Rings in Water 2016 (organised by ÚĽUV), who were astonished by the high level of the student’s design projects. ÚĽUV as one of the few in Slovakia promotes professional designers as well as secondary and university students who seek inspiration for their design in traditional patterns, materials and techniques.

The educational concept of the Studio of Product Design focuses on design practice in several aspects: from manufactural, user-friendly to ethical. The emphasis is placed on the knowledge of materials, technology and ergonomics together with the ability to see the product from the user’s point of view.

Long-term sustainability, ethical and environmental responsibility form an integral part of designing in the same way as encouraging complex design thinking amongst students. They often deal not only with the design of product itself but also with packaging design and the tools of sales promotion. Thus, it is important they are able to make connections between ideas, knowledge and specifications.

We focus on design as a whole – from the very first draft, through the functional prototype, to the presentation of the finished project. A collaborative practice provides students with feedback on their performance and teaches them to apply a critical approach to own work.

Head of the Studio of Product Design is MgA. Vladimír Kovařík.

The Studio of Digital Design focuses on websites, phone apps, user interface, informative architecture, interactive and visual design and motion graphics. We come up with user-friendly solutions but also we look for new options, innovative ideas and visions. The studio has close links with other departments, such as graphic design, multimedia and product design.

The aim of the studies is not to have a thorough knowledege of all the disciplines of the digital design, but rather to get a vision and ideas about own personal and professional development. We are open to new approaches and technologies but, at the same time we distinquish principles from short-lived trends.

Head of the Studio of Digital Design is MgA. Bohuslav Stránsky.
