A Chair is not a Toy

Michal Hanula

A Chair is not a ToyIn the last school year at the Secondary School of Applied Arts (ŠUV) in Ružomberok where the author of this article has been teaching for several years, the topic of a chair has been included into the education program. Students at the Department of Toys and Decorative Objects have come across this topic before – a stool for kids, often in a shape of a little animal. The result requested was a functional prototype of a chair made for the purpose of sitting. The topic was divided into two possible solutions: one was a type for industrial production and the other one was a freestyle design or an artdesign.
Some of the students recycled or upcycled used chairs. Others created a completely new model, beginning with cutting the material all the way through creating the final product suitable for sitting.
