Days of masters 2006 - Program

16th festival of traditional crafts and folk productions featuring presentations of Slovak regional music and meals

This year, the festival takes place on the occasion of the legal holiday of Slovakia - the Constitution Day in the precincts of the Bratislava Castle, under the auspices of the President of the Slovak Republic, Ivan Gašparovič and the mayor of the capital city Bratislava, Andrej Ďurkovský.

The Centre of Folk Art Production, which guarantees the best of the Slovak folk production, traditional handicrafts and folk art, is responsible for the dramaturgy of the festival. Handicrafts, folklore and gastronomic customs of Slovak regions will be presented within this year´s Days of Masters.

Main program

  • Live presentation of hand-made production - about 90 craftsmen from Slovakia with a great spectrum of crafts.
  • Traditional production and crafts in their contemporary form will be presented by the masters of coopery, pottery, basketry, tinker´s craft and smithery. The visitors can observe the production of troughs, shepherd´s kitchenware, tin and moulded bells, pewter ware, weaving, work with leather, straw knitting.
  • Folk art will be represented by textile techniques – needlework and bobbin lace, painting on glass, woodcarving, honey cake decoration, Easter egg decoration (punching, scratching, entwining with thread or wire).
  • Producers of music instruments will present their fujaras – shepherd´s flutes, pipes and jew´s harps.
  • Stands with information about craftsmen and traditional crafts in Slovakia
  • Sale of magazines and publications about handicraft
  • Creative workshops for children with lectors from the School of crafts of the Centre of Folk Art Production in Bratislava and Banská Bystrica
  • Children can try out the work with natural material and some easier production techniques, e.g. woodcarving, working with potter´s wheel, straw, honey cake decoration, doing bobbin lace, felting, weaving and painting on glass.
  • The honorary title Master of folk art production will be conferred to the best producers

On Friday evening, 1. September 2006, the title Master of folk art production will be conferred to six craftsmen. This award for high quality products confers every year the Commission for evaluation of professional capability of folk art producers of the Centre of Folk Art Production. Its members are prominent Slovak ethnographers, visual artists and designers. 335 craftsmen and folk producers from Slovakia were awarded up to now.

The highlight of the accompanying program of the Days of Masters will be the performance of the Slovak folk art ensemble (SĽUK) with the program The Dream on Friday, 1. September 2006 at 7.30 p.m.
